February 2017: Kari Yahiro & Richard Bang

When did you first start doing CrossFit?

 Him: August 2015

Her: September 2016

What were you doing before?

Him: Running 3-10 miles a week, insanity, p90x

Her: Playing basketball 2x a week and going to the gym... sometimes.

Thoughts after your first WOD?

Him: 4 rounds: 1 min max row, 1 min max push ups, 1 min box jumps, 1 min air squats. More sweat in 16 minutes than a 1 hour run. I had to lay onthe ground for about 5 minutes.

Her: This is crazy -- I'm not going to be able to move tomorrow.

Favorite CF Movement?

 Him: Snatch

Her: Push press

Life Outside the Box?

Him: Building Gundam models, playing Pokemon, watching footbal/basketball, convincing Kari to eat terrible food with me.

Her: Planning our wedding, building Gundam models, eating tacos and carne asada fries.

Greatest accomplishment at Irwindale CrossFit?

 Him: Bar Muscle Up

Her: Almost cleaning my body weight.

What advice would you give a newbie just joining Irwindale CrossFit?

Him: 2nd day after a workout hurts the most. Stretch before and after each workout or it will hurt even more. First two weeks hurt the most but you will see immediate results in a month. CrossFit is intimidating at first because you see guys and gals lifting huge weights, but every single person was in your shoes in the beginning. Keep showing up, we're all really friendly people.

Her: Don't be intimidated and do what you can do. Start slow and show up consistently.

January 2017: Alisa Salas

When did you start doing CrossFit? I started Crossfit around June of 2015, with my then 13yr. old son. We started with SweatFit classes and then transitioned to Crossfit.

What were you doing before? Mostly running, spin classes, Zumba and a little bit of yoga.

Thoughts after your first WOD? Holy Cow, they (the people who convinced me to try it) were right!!! I LOVE this!!!!

Favorite CF movement? Either box jumps or handstand push-ups, because they were/are the hardest movements for me to do so I feel the most accomplished when I've done them!

Life outside the box? (hobbies, work) I've been married to my high school sweetheart for nearly 17yrs. We have two kids, who keep us insanely busy with all of their sports and activities. I work for Weight Watchers at a 24/7 chat coach. My favorite pastime is running marathons, half marathons and trail-running. And as most of you know, I have a serious coffee addiction!

Greatest accomplishment at Irwindale CrossFit? There are two: The first time doing a box jump on an actual box (I started using (7) 45lb. plates stacked up, since the wooden box scared me so much) and getting my first double-under (Thanks to Coach Jenny!)

What advice would you give a newbie just joining Irwindale CrossFit? Try to not compare yourself to others. We all have our struggles and our strengths. Embrace your strengths and most importantly, just have FUN!!!

December 2016: Peter Careaga

When did you first start doing CrossFit? I first started crossfit last year, I believe around August 2015.

What were you doing before? Before crossfit, I played 4 years of Division III soccer at the University
of La Verne. After that, I tried doing the gym thing, but that did not
stick. I would also play indoor soccer about 3 nights a week, but was
still missing the challenge that collegiate soccer gave me.

Thoughts after your first WOD? In all honesty, I thought my first WOD was pretty easy. It was an EMOM and
I do not remember dying after the workout. I thought that crossfit was not
that tough, and decided to stick it out for a few weeks. Little did I know
the pains I would later experience in other WOD's (look up MURPH, FRAN, and
Crossfit Open 16.5). Irwindale Crossfit has given me a new drug to be
addicted to, one that I know that will present me with both physical and
mental challenges that I look forward to and face every time I step into
the box.

Favorite CF Movement? I would say I have 2 favorite movements: the clean and jerk, and the snatch.
But in all honesty I enjoy any movement that I have trouble doing, because
I know I can only get better with them over time. Ring muscle ups,
butterfly pull ups, hand stand push ups, pistol squats, etc.

Greatest accomplishment at Irwindale CrossFit: For all my accomplishments I have experienced in the past year, I would
have to say my favorite accomplishment is to share this sport with my
mother, July's athlete of the month, Tess Careaga. Not only do I get to
see her more often, but I literally see how much of a bad ass she is. In
less than a year's time, she has made some enormous strides in this sport,
improving her health, and growing into one hell of an athlete. As her son,
I am extremely proud of her and how she has transformed into the athlete
that she is today, in such a short span of time. Because of Irwindale
Crossfit, she can no longer use age as an excuse of getting out of things!
Next, skydiving mom! And I think I can confidently say this: I GOT IT FROM
MY MAMA!!!

What advice would you give a newbie just joining Irwindale CrossFit? 2 things I would tell a newbie: 1. If my mom can do it, you can. She has
NEVER done anything remotely as intense as this sport; she has stuck it out
and only improved because of it. 2. Give yourself 3 days to try it. You
will hurt, but make it out of those 3 days and you will know you are
capable of doing anything you put your mind to. This sport pushes you
physically, yes, but mentally as well. If you can overcome the mental
barriers presented to you, then you will be an unstoppable force. You will
be capable of anything you set your mind to, not just in the box, but in
any aspect of life. Irwindale Crossfit will help you discover that about
yourself. And when you do learn this, nothing will ever hold you back.

See you at the box soon!

-Baby J

November 2016: Herlinda Valdovinos

When did you start doing CrossFit? September 12, 2015

What were you doing before? Gym Cardio (not consistent)

Thoughts after your first WOD? I died! hahaha but I was really excited
after the first WOD, I loved the idea of incooperating weights to my workout.

Favorite CF movement? Back Squats (LOVE) then Snatches.

Life outside the box? (hobbies, work) Gym and more Gym! hahaha. I'm a cheer
mom to a beautiful 15yr old so my life revolves around practices, football
games and competitions, which I love! I work for a hospice company and it
can become very stressful, that is why I love going to the box after work
because its relaxes me. I also play soccer on the weekends, not the
greatest of player but I can take down one or two boys #lamatadora :)

Greatest accomplishment at Irwindale CrossFit? I would have to say that the
greatest accomplishment has been the physical change but the most important
one would be the personal development. Irwindale Crossfit has helped me
realized that I am much stronger and dedicated than I could have ever
imagined. Life Changing!

What advice would you give a newbie just joining Irwindale CrossFit?

Try it!!! You will love it! Dont be afraid or intimidated by what others
are doing. You are only in competition with yourself! It sounds so cliche
but its so true! My advice is to focus on technique and once you have that
down then really start putting on weight. Once you get a taste of the
Turtlehood you will love it!!

The reason I love this place so much is not only because I get a kick ass
workout everytime but because this is a place where everyone is welcomed
with open arms and we are supportive of one another. We become your second family! So join us and become part of the TURTLE FAMILY!

October 2016: Patricia Torres

When did you start doing CrossFit? " I started February 2015, but thought about joining a box way before."

What were you doing before? "Walking, jogging (a little bit), lifting light weights and zumba."

Thoughts after your first WOD? " Oh my...It's a workout that I'll never forget. My first workout was Push Ups, Pull Ups (banded), Air Squats and KB Swings (light KB). I remember thinking when the coach was showing us the movements "This doesn't look too bad/dificult" but at the end of the workout I felt like dying, my heart was pounding so fast and I was sweating so much, I could barely feel my arms from all the push ups and I was sore for an entire week!"

Favorite CF Movement? "I really like doing Power Cleans and Kettlebell swings. Squat cleans are a little bit trickier for me."

Life outside the box? "Work, school (trying to finish up), spend time with my family/friends and walk my dog."

Greatest accomplishment at Irwindale CrossFit? "It's kind of hard to choose one but I know one of them has to be how much I've learned about nutrition. Coach Jenny and Coach Ish have taught me so much during the Nutrition Challenges at the box. We all kind of know what's good or bad in regards to food but sometimes it's kind of difficult to follow a nutrition regimen because of our culutre or lifestyle. Taking these nutrition challenges has taught me to choose a healthier lifestyle, not perfect, but definitely improved. Another accomplishment I'm proud of is being consistent, I try to make time to come in to the box, even if I'm feeling tired from work, down or just a lazy."

What advice would you give a newbie just joining Irwindale CrossFit? "I would advise them to keep coming! Be consistent, don't miss because you aren't comfortable with a WOD or movement, it gets easier if you practice it. Enjoy every bit of each WOD, your body and mind will thank you later!"

September 2016: Nelly McLain

When did you start doing CrossFit? I started crossfit back in October 2014

What were you doing before? Before crossfit I was running and doing bootcamp 4 days a week.

Thoughts after your first WOD? After completing my first WOD I was in love. It felt great to finally find something that was super challenging. It wasn't an easy workout, I felt like quitting half way but that's what I loved. Having that feeling of quitting is what hooked me. I took it as a personal challenge. I wanted to overcome the feeling of failure.

Favorite CF movement? I don't have a favorite movement. I for sure hate snatches, maybe because I can't do one to save my life. Burpees are always fun!

Life outside the box? I love hiking and playing volleyball. I'm a stay at home mama and loving every minute. I enjoy dancing. I sometimes find myself taking kickboxing classes to de-stress.

Greatest accomplishment at Irwindale CF? I'm proud of myself for continuing with crossfit while pregnant with my second child. While pregnant it was tough to show up and stay motivated but with two kids it's even harder. I still find a way to put in the work!

What advice would you give a newbie just joining Irwindale CrossFit? I would tell a newbie to just come in and have fun. Set goals for yourself and the coaches here will work with you to obtain them.

When did you start doing CrossFit? I started CrossFit the summer of 2014 @ CrossFit Trig which is located in San Dimas

I was a gym rat and spent most of my time at 24hr Fitness using barbells, dumbbells, cable machines and treadmills.

Coach Jen for being patient with me and teaching me techniques that have improved my arsenal of movements… Jesse for always being a great motivator and endless complements on how I was getting much better. Heri for his one on one coaching during my vacations or sick days. I can’t forget all the fellow turtles who have inspired me someway somehow Chico,Rudy,Baby J, Panda, X, Barbas, Lopez ,Kentucky, Eric, Yepez the DR. Don't focus on how hard the WOD looks or how good the other athletes do, focus on finishing strong and push yourself to our limits because you will succeed.

January 2016: Jasmin Alejandrez

When did you first start doing CrossFit? July 2015

What were you doing before? "Not much, physically. Let's say the only exercise I was dedicated to at that time was from fork to mouth -- eating was my pastime. haha"

Thoughts after your first WOD? "I remember thinking I was going to pass out during and after my first WOD. I had done insanity and P90x in the past, but never had anything so physically challenging. I was immediately sore that night, and I knew that CrossFit was going to be my new found passion."

Favorite CF Movement? "It would have to be double unders. It teaches you patience when first trying to grasp the movement and timing. Once you get the hang of it, you just can't stop! They're fun!"

Life Outside the Box? "I'm a social media marketing/PR professional who works in the entertainment field. As for my personal life, I am a dedicated Yorkie Mommy to a pup named Rocko. When I'm not spending time with my fur baby I'm attending live shows and spending quality time with my family and friends who I love dearly."

What advice would you giv e a newbie just joining Irwindale CrossFit? "The advice I would lend to someone who's pursuing the interest in joining CrossFit as a lifestyle would be to set aside your insecurities and dont be discouraged to try something new! Aside from all the misconceptions, CF is very family oriented, and it's an encouraging community. It's all about becoming a better version than the person you were yesterday. Isn't that what we should strive for everyday? :) "
